Rules for Using the Creative Space

SOLS Creative Space Policy

To achieve a positive and productive library experience for all library patrons, SOLS staff will enforce the following rules for patron conduct.

Creative Space Policy:

Purpose Statement
The SOLS Creative Space (Makerspace) is a collaborative, hands-on environment designed to inspire creativity, innovation, and lifelong learning. The space provides access to tools, technology, and resources that allow patrons to explore new skills, create projects, and engage in experiential learning. The Creative Space supports the library’s mission to provide equitable access to information, foster creativity, and strengthen community connections.

General Use Policy
Use of the SOLS Creative Space is a privilege. All users must comply with the Library’s General Conduct Policy, Internet Policy, and all other applicable Library policies and procedures.

Eligibility & Access

  • Users must be SOLS library cardholders in good standing.
  • Users must check in with staff before using any tools or equipment.
  • A staff member will be present to provide basic guidance; however, the space is primarily intended for self-directed use.
  • Children under 14 must have a parent or guardian present to use the equipment.
  • Users must observe the maximum capacity rules of whichever SOLS Creative Space they are using.

Training & Certification

  • Certain equipment requires completion of training prior to independent use.
  • Users may be required to demonstrate competency before using specific tools.
  • The library reserves the right to restrict access to equipment based on safety or skill level.

Safety & Responsibility

  • First-time independent users must sign an Acknowledgement of Risk and Release Form.
  • A notation of this agreement will be added to the patron’s library record.
  • Users must immediately report any damaged, malfunctioning, or unsafe equipment to staff.
  • Users are responsible for always using equipment safely and appropriately.

Fees & Materials

  • Use of equipment is free of charge.
  • Some consumable materials provided by SOLS may require a fee.
  • Users may bring their own approved materials for certain machines, subject to staff review.

Acceptable Use

  • The Creative Space may not be used for commercial purposes, including the production of items for sale.
  • Users must respect intellectual property rights and comply with U.S. copyright law.
  • The creation of illegal, unsafe, or prohibited items is strictly forbidden.

Space Guidelines

  • Food and drinks are not permitted in the Creative Space.
  • Users must keep the workspace clean and return tools and materials to their proper locations.
  • Time limits may be enforced during high-demand periods.
  • Personal belongings should not be left unattended.

Makerspace Safety Guidelines

  • Follow all posted safety instructions and staff directions.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
  • Do not use equipment while distracted, fatigued, or under the influence of substances.
  • Tie back long hair and avoid loose clothing when operating machinery.
  • Only use equipment for its intended purpose.
  • Emergency procedures and equipment locations will be clearly posted and must be followed.

Failure to follow these policies may result in suspension or revocation of Creative Space privileges, and/or other disciplinary action in accordance with Library policy.

Additional Recommended Policies & Procedures
The Library may also consider implementing:

  • Reservation system for high-demand equipment
  • Age requirements or guardian supervision guidelines for minors
  • Project approval for certain tools (e.g., laser cutters, 3D printers)
  • File retention and data privacy guidelines
  • Equipment-specific policies (e.g., 3D printing, audio/video production)
  • Orientation sessions for new users
