Between Bites Book Club – Parker Memorial Library

August 6, 2025

Join Parker Memorial Library for the next Between Bites Book Club on Wednesday, August 13th at 12:00 PM. This club is a laid-back lunch hour book club where good stories and great conversations come together for adults ages 18 and up. This month’s book selection is “The Orphan Collector” by Marie Wiseman. Bring your own lunch and let’s chat while we chew!

In the fall of 1918, thirteen-year-old German immigrant Pia Lange longs to escape Philadelphia’s overcrowded slums and the anti-immigrant sentiment that drove her father to enlist in the U.S. Army. As the city celebrates the end of war, the Spanish flu strikes, bringing death and despair. When food runs out in her tenement, Pia must venture into the quarantined city for supplies, leaving her baby brothers behind. Bernice Groves, consumed by grief over her baby’s death from the flu, seizes the opportunity to disrupt families. She aims to transform orphans and immigrant children into what she sees as “true Americans.” After collapsing in the streets, Pia awakens in St. Vincent’s Orphan Asylum, unaware of Bernice’s sinister plans. With love and resilience, Pia fights to reclaim her family and seek justice.

Participants are encouraged to check out the book by visiting the Parker Memorial Library at 500 West Broadway in Sulphur. You can also call the library at (580) 634-2315 for more information. The Parker Memorial Library is a branch of the Southern Oklahoma Library System.
