Book Club – Johnston County Library

October 30, 2025

Engage in a book discussion with the Johnston County Library at 6:30 PM, Thursday, November 6th. Conversation, fellowship, and refreshments will be centered on popular book titles for adults to discuss. Participants will share views on “The Return of the Native” by Thomas Hardy. Snacks provided by the Friends of Johnston County Library.

One of Thomas Hardy’s most compelling novels, “The Return of the Native,” centers memorably on Egdon Heath, the wild, brooding Wessex moor that D. H. Lawrence described as “the real stuff of tragedy.” The heath’s shifting character parallels the fates of the farmers, innkeepers, sons, mothers, and lovers who inhabit the story. The “native” is Clym Yeobright, who returns from an urbane life in Paris. He, his cousin Thomasin, her fiancé Damon Wildeve, and the headstrong Eustacia Vye serve as protagonists in a drama of ill-fated love, desire, isolation, and gloom as Hardy masterfully explores his recurring theme: the remorseless influence of chance in shaping destiny.
