Engage in a book discussion with the Johnston County Library at 6:30 PM, Thursday, September 4th. Conversation, fellowship, and refreshments will be centered on popular book titles for adults to discuss. Participants will share views on “Lake of the Ozarks” by Bill Geist.
Before “tourism” and “kitsch,” the Lake of the Ozarks was a Shangri-La for middle-class Midwestern families, featuring man-made beaches and quirky attractions. Author Bill Geist spent his summers there in the Sixties, working at his uncle’s resort, Arrowhead Lodge. What began as a summer job transformed his life, as the eccentric locals and unique experiences shaped his sensibilities, humor, and writing. This period influenced his career as he later sought out untamed stories for the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, and CBS News.
