Join Parker Memorial Library for Booked on a Thursday Book Club at 5:30 PM on Thursday, August 20th. Light refreshments will be provided and spirited discussion encouraged. This month’s book will be Lisa See’s “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women”.
Confucius said, “An educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian’s grandparents raise her to defy this, teaching her Chinese medicine. Her grandmother, one of China’s few female doctors, instructs Yunxian in the Four Examinations—skills men cannot use with female patients. Growing up, Yunxian learns about women’s health with Meiling, a midwife-in-training, and the two form a close bond, despite traditional rules separating doctors and midwives. Their shared challenges strengthen their friendship, but when Yunxian is forced into an arranged marriage, her new family forbids her from seeing Meiling or practicing medicine. Confined to the life of a traditional wife, Yunxian must find a way to break free from these restrictions. Will her friendship with Meiling help or hinder her quest to improve women’s lives, a legacy that endures centuries later?
