Join others at the Love County Library’s book club at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, January 20th. Conversation, fellowship, and refreshments will be centered on popular book titles for adults to discuss. This month’s book, “Heaven & Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride will be featured.
In 1972, workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, unexpectedly discovered a skeleton at the bottom of a well while digging foundations for a new development. This find raised questions about the identity of the skeleton and its origins, secrets long kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, a neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side. Moshe and Chona Ludlow were residents there; Moshe integrated his theater while Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state sought to institutionalize a deaf boy, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at the theater and community leader, who joined forces to protect him.
